Small Loans Assistance Program

The Small Loans Assistance Program provides Nova Scotian homeowners with low interest loans to help improve their housing conditions through home repairs, additions or renovations.  

Qualifying applicants can apply to receive a loan of up to $20,000 to be repaid over a maximum period of 10 years. If a chattel mortgage is used to secure the loan, the repayment term is a maximum of six years.


Funding is available to applicants that meet the following criteria:

  • Your total gross annual income does not exceed $60,000
  • You must own and live in the home you want to renovate
  • You have a favourable credit rating

Eligible costs may include:

  • Materials and equipment rental
  • Contractor labour and related costs
  • Provincial sales tax and goods and services tax
  • Legal costs (up to $1,500)
